1 107 Fire Departments Services d'incendies The NBAFC is the voice of over 4850 Officers and Fire Fighters within the Province of New Brunswick. The fire service of New Brunswick is no different than our counterparts worldwide, a mix of career and volunteer firefighters who meet the challenges of fire suppression, fire prevention, rescue, emergency medical services and Hazardous Material response. Continuous training is a necessity for the fire service in order to keep abreast of changing technologies. The NBAFC continues to strive to improve legislation in areas of Training for our fire service as well as Fire Prevention & Safety Education to our Provincial Schools to educate our children in fire safety. Health and Safety is the number one priority of our fire fighters and we continue to meet with Government to stress the importance of providing our members with the most up to date equipment and regulations. 5 2025 Fire Chief for a Day Chef pompier d’un jour 2025 CONGRATULATIONS, Ryker! FÉLICITATIONS, Ryker! On December 3rd, 2025 Ryker and his classmates from Nelson Elementary in Miramichi were taken to the Miramichi Fire Dept where they met Sparky the Fire Dog and representatives from the Office of the Fire Marshal along with members of the Miramichi Fire Dept. the students got a tour of the fire hall, a K9 demonstration and treated to pizza and cupcakes in the firehall. Ryker was presented with his own set of bunker gear, a backpack of fire safety material including a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher. He received his plaque and some swag from the Miramichi Fire Dept and got a ride back to school in a Fire Truck. Le 3 décembre 2025, Ryker et ses camarades de l'école primaire Nelson de Miramichi ont été emmenés à la caserne des pompiers de Miramichi. Ils ont rencontré Sparky, le chien pompier, ainsi que des représentants du Bureau du commissaire aux incendies et des pompiers. Les élèves ont visité la caserne, assisté à une démonstration canine et dégusté de la pizza et des petits gâteaux. Ryker a reçu sa propre tenue de pompier, un sac à dos contenant du matériel de sécurité incendie, dont un détecteur de fumée et un extincteur. Il a aussi reçu une plaque et des cadeaux des pompiers de Miramichi, puis est retourné à l'école à bord d'un camion de pompiers.

7 POISON If you swallow, lick, or in some cases, breathe in the chemical, you could become very sick or die. DO NOT play with, touch, shake, eat or drink any of the things that have these symbols shown on them: EXPLOSIVE The container can explode if heated or punctured. Flying pieces of metal or plastic from the container can cause serious injury, especially to your eyes. CORROSIVE The product can burn your skin or eyes. If swallowed, it can damage your throat and stomach. FLAMMABLE The product or its fumes will catch fire easily if it is near heat, flames, or sparks. Rags used with this product may begin to burn on their own. HAZARD SYMBOL FRAMES: The shape of the frame around the hazard symbol tells you what part of the product is dangerous: The signal word(s) underneath the hazard symbol explain the degree of risk: Signal words: CAUTION means temporary injury may result. Death may occur with extreme exposure. DANGER means may cause temporary or permanent injury, or death. EXTREME DANGER means exposure to very low amounts may cause death or serious injury. If it's a triangle, it means the container is dangerous. If it's an octagon, it means the contents are dangerous.

11 Test your Smoke Alarms! The fire fighters of New Brunswick remind you that smoke alarms save lives - but only if they are in good working order. To make sure your smoke alarms work, test them each month by pushing the alarm test button. If you have difficulty reaching your alarm, use a broom handle to gently push the test button for 30 seconds. If the alarm doesn’t sound, have the battery or alarm replaced immediately. 13 Give Space Heaters Space Laissez de l’espace pour les radiateurs Portable space heaters can quickly warm up a cold room but they have also been the cause of many serious home fires. They must be used with care. Keep portable heaters at least three feet (one metre) away from things that could burn such as clothing, bedding, furniture, or curtains. And make sure you turn heaters off before leaving home or going to bed. Les radiateurs individuels portatifs peuvent réchauffer rapidement une pièce froide mais ils sont aussi la cause de nombreux incendies graves de maison. Ils doivent être utilisés avec précaution. Prévoyez au moins trois pieds (un mètre) entre les radiateurs portatifs et les objets qui peuvent brûler, par exemple les vêtements, la literie, les meubles ou les rideaux. 15 Attention au danger! Don’t Reach for Danger! If a pot caught on fire in your kitchen, would you know what to do? Your fire department wants you to put a lid on cooking fires. Keep a proper fitting lid nearby and slide it over the burning pan, then turn off the burner. When you cook, always wear tight fitting sleeves and never reach over a hot burner. A dangling sleeve passing over a burner can suddenly catch fire. If this happens, knowing what to do is a matter of life and death. Don’t panic and run. Drop to the floor and roll over and over to smother the flames. Si une casserole prenait feu sur la cuisinière, s a u r i e z - v o u s comment agir? Savoir quoi faire dans un tel cas est une question de vie ou de mort. Ne paniquez pas et ne courez pas. Laissez-vous glisser sur le plancher et roulez-vous par terre pour étouffer les flammes.

17 Careless Smoking: Death by Fire Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths. If you know someone who smokes, be sure to remind them of these safe-smoking habits. Smokers should never smoke in bed or when tired. Heavy drinking and smoking can be a lethal combination. Smokers should use large, deep ashtrays and never empty ashtrays into the garbage. Ashes should be disposed of in the toilet or doused with water. If there is a smoker in your household, make sure your home is well equipped with smoke alarms that will alert you in case of fire. Si vous connaissez quelqu’un qui fume, rappelez-lui les habitudes sécuritaires de fumer. Les fumeurs ne doivent jamais fumer au lit ni lorsqu’ils sont fatigués. S’il y a un fumeur dans votre ménage, assurez-vous que votre maison est bien équipée de détecteurs de fumée qui vous alerteront en cas d’incendie.

19 Fire Won’t Wait - Plan Your Escape If fire broke out tonight while you were sleeping, would you get out alive? You must develop a home fire escape plan now and practice it regularly. Make sure you know two ways out of each room. If you encounter thick smoke, drop to the floor and crawl on your hands and knees to safety. Call the Fire Department from a neighbour’s home. Remember, fire won’t wait - so plan your escape. L’incendie n’attendra pas – planifiez votre sortie Si un incendie se déclarait cette nuit pendant que vous dormez, auriez-vous le temps de sortir? 31 Most fire victims never even see flames. They die from smoke inhalation. PLANNING AND PRACTICING A HOME FIRE PREVENTION AND ESCAPE PLAN CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE. In order to react fast to fire, you should draw a diagram of your house and plan your escape from each room, to familiarize yourself with it. 33 • Install smoke alarms on every level - outside the bedroom, near the kitchen and garage. Keep them clean and dust-free. Check smoke alarms monthly. (Some fire departments and manufacturers say weekly.) Replace batteries yearly and alarms every 10 years. • Draw a floor plan of all levels of your home with normal and emergency exits, including two from each bedroom. Designate a safe meeting place outside and someone to call 911 from a neighbour’s home. • Practice the plan, including crawling out with eyes closed (heavy smoke impairs breathing and sight; staying close to the floor increases chances of escape). 35 • Small children unable to escape can learn to open their windows and wave an article of clothing to attract attention. They can wait at the window until someone comes, and never hide from the fire. Discuss with a fire department official whether an escape ladder would be appropriate. • Sleep with doors closed. If children are frightened, parents can close doors after the children fall asleep and use a room monitor to hear them in the night. • If awakened by a smoke alarm or a fire, instruct family members to feel the door for heat and check air at bottom. If you don’t smell smoke and the air is cool, kneel and open the door slowly, turning your face away from the opening. If smoke is present or the door is hot, use another exit. • Have your parents purchase and learn how to use an A-B-C fire extinguisher. Remember “PASS”: PULL the pin, AIM the extinguisher, SQUEEZE or press the handle, SWEEP side to side at the base of the fire. (The rating is based on the fuel. 41 Créez votre propre plan d’évacuation, comme suit: • Installez vos avertisseurs d’incendie à chaque étage, à l’extérieur de chaque chambre, près de la cuisine et du garage. Gardez-les propres et exempts de poussière. Vérifiez-les chaque mois (certains services d’incendie recommandent de le faire chaque semaine). Remplacez les piles chaque année et les détecteurs, tous les dix ans. • Dessinez un plan de chaque étage de la maison en y incluant les sorties normales et d’urgence, y compris deux sorties pour chaque chambre à coucher. Déterminez un lieu de rencontre sécuritaire à l’extérieur de la maison, de même que le nom de l’occupant qui devra faire le 911 à partir de la maison d’un voisin. • Mettez le plan en pratique en rampant avec les yeux fermés (une fumée dense affaiblit la respiration et la vue). 43 • Les jeunes enfants incapables de s’échapper peuvent apprendre à ouvrir leur fenêtre et à faire flotter un morceau de tissu pour attirer l’attention. Enseignez-leur à demeurer à leur fenêtre jusqu’à ce que quelqu’un vienne les chercher et à ne jamais se cacher. Demandez à votre service des incendies s’il serait pertinent de vous munir d’une échelle de sauvetage. • Dormez les portes fermées. Si les enfants ont peur, attendez qu’ils soient endormis pour fermer leur porte et utilisez un appareil d’écoute pour les entendre durant la nuit. • Si vous êtes réveillé par un avertisseur d’incendie, les membres de votre famille doivent vérifier si leur porte est chaude et l’air circule en dessous.
