NBAFC Protocol for Firefighter License Plates

The Minister of Transportation, at the request of the New Brunswick Association of Fire Chiefs, affirmed to the Association that the Department was proceeding with the issuance of distinctive license plates for firefighter’s privately owned motor vehicles. This move was made to recognize and honour the service rendered to the public by firefighters throughout the province.

Subsequently, meetings were held with officials of the Department, that established a protocol for the registering the names of firefighters who were deemed to qualify for recognition.

In general, the qualifying and recording names of persons for the special license plates was delegated to the NBAFC, although the authority for issuance of the plates comes under subsection 13(2) of Regulation 83-42 under the Motor Vehicle Act, relative to passenger vehicles or light trucks (under 4500 kilograms).

The Department (now Public Safety) require that:

  1. Vehicle is registered in the name of the firefighter,

  2. Vehicle is under 4500 kilogram mass, automobile and/or light truck .

  3. Firefighter pays $25.00 fee for each vehicle.

  4. Firefighter may register more than one vehicle as long as they are registered in his/her name.

  5. Firefighter will continue to pay the annual license fee for each vehicle.

  6. Firefighter’s name must be on the list of qualified names provided by the NBAFC.

  7. Current regular license plates are turned in.

  8. Show proof of insurance on vehicles.

 The NBAFC requires that:

  1. Firefighters be members of a recognized NB Fire Department, which is recognized as an emergency service provider (ESP) by NB 9-1-1.

  2. Firefighters are recommended by their Chief in a list signed by the Chief, and sent to the person designated by the NBAFC to receive and record the list.

  3. List contains full name, address and postal code of recommended firefighter.

  4. Each list submitted to include new eligible names and names of persons no longer in the fire service.

  5. Lists to be reviewed by the Chief frequently, and at least annually, showing changes of addresses as well as names.

  6. The NBAFC License Plate Coordinator to keep a master list of eligible Firefighters. A copy of the current master list will be sent to the Department of Public Safety on or near the 15th day of January, April, July and October of each year.

The Department of Public Safety official will issue the new list to the Service New Brunswick offices around the province shortly after receipt of the list.

Persons who become ineligible to participate in the license plate program, due to retirement, leaving the service or any other reason, will have their names removed from the list, and will surrender their firefighter plates upon registration renewal.

It is the responsibility of the local fire chief to submit the list, making the changes necessary for participation in the firefighter license plate program.

It is incumbent on each firefighter to operate a vehicle with firefighter plates in a manner appropriate to the Motor Vehicle Act of the Province of New Brunswick. Some courtesies may be extended to firefighters who have the plates, but possession of the plates DOES NOT EXTEND ANY SPECIAL PRIVILEDGES OR RIGHTS UNDER THE MOTOR VEHICLE ACT. It is well to remind firefighters that it is an offence under the Act to deface any license plate with non-original markings, decals or other devices.
