New Brunswick Association of Fire Prevention Officers / Association des Agents de Prévention des Incendies du Nouveau - Brunswick

On Friday, November 6th, 2009 we responded to a call for a fire alarm in our
area. The result of the alarm was a programmable thermostat that shorted
out on the circuit board of the unit. The call was at 04:16 hours and
thankfully, the residents were woken by the alarm system in the home. This
had the potential to be much worse than what we discovered on arrival.
The homeowner had just purchased the unit from a local Canadian Tire store
less than one month ago. On returning the unit (as well as all the others
in his home) the store stated "they get them returned like that all the
time".
The thermostat is a Noma Programmable Thermostat Model # HTM611A (photo is
attached). Currently on sale again at Canadian Tire.
Since we are beginning to use our heat more these days, I have some concern.
Have there been any other Fire Departments or Fire Prevention Divisions that
have come across this issue recently? Send replies to fireprevention@nb.aibn.com
