Carbon
monoxide (CO) is present at every fire but symptoms are not a
reliable indicator of CO levels and whether or not someone needs treatment.
In addition to the short-term risk that CO presents, it is now understood
that even moderate levels of CO poisoning expose first responders to
long-term risk. That’s why the new NFPA 1584 fire rehab standards call for
CO assessment during rehab. This webcast presentation by Randolph Mantooth
and Dr. Bryan Bledsoe will introduce participants to both the personal risks
of CO poisoning and how to comply with the new rehab standards which include
CO assessment. In addition, this presentation will inform participants of
the resources available to fully educate themselves and fellow first
responders.
Randolph Mantooth has traveled the distance from his portrayal of LA
County Firefighter/Paramedic Johnny Gage on the 1970s TV show EMERGENCY! to
being a well-known and respected advocate for all emergency responders.
Today, Randy is traveling the country educating fire fighters about the
duty-related dangers of CO and reducing known risk factors that can
unnecessarily kill and injure hundreds of fire fighters each year. His
personal, from-the-heart presentation, is guaranteed to motivate
firefighters and paramedics to take a more proactive role in reducing on the
job risks to their health and safety.
Dr. Bryan Bledsoe is Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at the
University of Nevada School of Medicine and a board-certified emergency
physician at University Medical Center in Las Vegas. Dr. Bledsoe has served
as the Medical Director for two hospital emergency departments as well as
for numerous EMS agencies. He is the author of numerous EMS textbooks
including: Paramedic Care: Principles & Practice, Paramedic Emergency Care,
Prehospital Emergency Pharmacology, Anatomy and Physiology for Emergency
Care and many others. He is a frequent contributor to EMS magazines and
presenter at national and international EMS conferences. His talk will focus
on the latest National Fire Protection Association standards including CO
assessment and treatment of CO poisoning.
